CEO notes that the second and third place consoles are still \'meaningful.\'

It seems that not many expected the Wii to be the current leader this console generation, and that includes industry giant Electronic Arts (EA). In a recent interview with the San Jose Mercury News (via MCV), EA CEO John Riccitiello was open about mistakes they believe they have made this console generation -- namely choosing to focus on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 instead of the Wii.

\"We made the wrong call there [by betting on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360], which made this transition harder than it would otherwise be,\" Riccitiello said, adding, \"But now we\'re catching up, and I think we\'re fine.\" By fine, we hope he he\'s referring to the excellent Boom Blox and not the mediocre Ninja Reflex.

A stronger focus on Wii development doesn\'t mean the former largest videogame publisher will abandon the other two platforms. Riccitiello notes the effects of a growing industry on three platforms: \"Unusual in this cycle is there\'s a second and third place that is meaningful, against which we can build a profitable business.\" With the company pulling in over $4 billion in fiscal year 2008, profitable might be an understatement.

Riccitiello\'s statements are further reinforced simply by taking a peek at their official site\'s individual platform pages. Early on, it\'s obvious to see that the Wii was an after-thought as all of their titles on the platform were moderately-received multi-platform sequels. If what Riccitiello said is true, we\'ll be seeing more high-quality original content on the Wii. Hopefully these future titles will balance out the overwhelming amount of shovelware available for the media darling. Oh, and hopefully they\'ll be better than Boogie.
