Buttons And Magnets

We have made these “I have Autism” buttons for a few years now.  We designed and made the buttons but the idea was created by Nicholas Lombardi, age 11, for his brother Joey, age 9, who has autism. Nicholas wanted to explain to the world that Joey, and other kids like him, cannot help how they behave. He wants people to be more understanding of his brother and other people with autism.  These buttons are being sold on Autism Speaks website at http://events.autismspeaks.org/c.ghKJIYPGIqE/b.3962073/site/apps/ka/ec/Product.asp?ProductID=564763 . Nicholas’s mother orders these buttons from us.  She told us Nicholas said “mom, we could help lots of kids this way…and sell them and pay for some more speech therapy. “  His mom is so proud and we enjoy making buttons for such a great cause.

We made “It’s my birthday, Shamu” 2.25-inch custom buttons for SeaWorld Adventure Park Orlando last week.  They designed the button image and emailed it to us to put on buttons.  SeaWorld  orders these buttons periodically.  They re-order by just filling out the quote form, we then email them the image to verify and a link to make payment.  They usually order their buttons in just minutes.  The buttons have a blue background and have Shamu smiling in the middle of the button and says “It’s my birthday!”.  I was starting to think that Shamu has a lot of birthdays. But after visiting SeaWorlds’ website (http://www.seaworld.org/ask-shamu/faq.htm#killer-whales), I see that Shamu is a stage name used for any of the adult male or female killer whales in their shows.  No wonder they have so many birthday parties.

I was looking for buttons to hand out at my friends surprise birthday party and came across www.buttonstar.com.  After looking at a few other places to get buttons from I decided to go with ButtonStar.  There free clipart was the reason.  I tried to draw what I wanted, but I’m not even close to an artist. 

It was very easy on ButtonStars website to get the exact look I wanted on the button for the party.  There were over 9 million images that were all free for me to use for my buttons.  I worked with one of there designers, used the free clipart and that was it.  I am very happy with the buttons and will defintely use ButtonStar again.

At ButtonStar, we use only the highest quality USA made parts to make our buttons.  We get our parts from Tecre in Wisconsin.  Tecre specializes in the design and production of high quality electric and manual button assembly machines and they manufacture button parts to perfectly match their equipment.  A button is made of four parts- a metal pin-back, a metal shell, a 3 mil plastic mylar and an image printed and cut to size.  The pin-back and shell are made of a shiney metal.  The pin-back has 2 holes in the back with a metal safety pin.  When assembled the mylar protects the image and gives the button a shine.

I love designing my own look. Even though in high school it is really wiser to just blend in. I want to stand out. My mom is really proud of me, and I am equally proud of her. She is the one who taught me to value my independence and individuality. We have our queen bees at school, but they don’t razz me much. I guess they respect my need to be different from their clones.

One thing that I really like jazzing up is my backpack. I have had the same backpack since school started but it has evolved through the months. I once painted it with some fabric paint. Then I added patches. Now I am into sticking on buttons of different designs. Even the bees like my bag. They asked me once where I got the school buttons I stuck on it. I said, “like, duh, at the coop of course.” But I guess they’d never be caught shopping there.

I have always been apathetic when it comes to politics. I feel that only the rich really have influence on what happens to our country. But the last election was really significant for me. But because of the crisis we are experiencing right now, I think that it is really time to make a change. Not since the time of JFK had I really felt that I was important, or that my vote matters. This election I had my candidate, and I believed that he could help us change this situation that we are in.

During the last election, I proudly wore my Obama paraphernalia, which included pin-back buttons with his picture on them. Barack is the man. He is the one who can make a difference. But we all need to pitch in. He can’t do it all on his own. The difference is here. The difference is us!

I ordered a bunch of buttons off this site and sold them to friends, family and co-workers.  Everyone loved them!   This one is my favorite!

Cheerleaders are a happy bunch. The cheerleaders provide moral support to the school’s varsity basketball team. They keep the school spirit alive by leading the crowd in cheers and encouraging the crowd to cheer loudly.

These cheerleaders may not know it but they play a crucial role in every sports event that the school joins. They bring zest to any game. They must be proud of who they are and what they do for the school because they often pin a cheerleading button on their uniforms.

The election is over and our country has a new president. I am so happy that Obama won. I have high hopes for him and for our nation.

I even campaigned for him in my own little way by pinning a custom made button declaring who I was voting for on my shirt. The button always made people I met smile. It was definitely an effective campaign tool.
